I found very limited or outdated information when I started to do it so I want to share my experience with the travel community. Djibouti Visa: Bloody difficult to get in Addis Ababa. I booked a hotel through booking and cancelled it afterwards. From Dire Dawa I took the train to the border of Djibouti which runs every tuesday and I think thursday for birr. It leaves at 5am sharp and therefore I stayed in the hotel opposite the train station for birr no sheets!
Owner speaks very good english and restaurant is attached. Border crossing itself is smooth. They drop you a bit outside but with another local bus for 50francs you'll get to the center. I stayed in Rahma Hotel.
It is the cheapest, I checked all other hotels! Price is or around for a double. Yes Djibouti is expensive. But the hotel is good enough. Quiet, good working wifi and friendly staff. Location of Rahma Hotel is: 13 Avenue on the right side when you walk in ocean direction. In the same building is a branch of 'East Africa Bank', only bank that accepted my european debit card maestro.
You can withdraw max Ethiopian Visa you need to get it in Djibouti unless you have a multiple entry one, you wont be able to receive a visa in Somaliland! Djibouti to Hargeysa is an overnight 4wd that costs DJF. Go in the morning around 10 is fine to Avenue 26 exactly behind Rahma Hotel I tried to mark it on mapsme like the Rahma Hotel and I hope it got uploaded.
You need to pay in advance in order to reserve a seat for you. Then you return at around pm though you wont leave before Then they wanted another for my backpack, I refuesed and wanted my money back etc so of course I could go for the initial Just keep in mind 'never pay extra for your luggage'!
